Southwest is hoping for its internet to reach faster speeds and higher capabilities, and is allowing all customers free access on the 40 aircraft where these tests are taking place. The airline told TPG Friday, the tests is conducting is on "next generation" hardware from Anuvu. That unpredictability is part of what the carrier is looking to improve as it experiments with ways to improve its internet reliability. But I had reliable internet access and got several stories filed on the return flight and I even streamed music via YouTube as I worked. On a recent trip to New England, I had to wait to file this TPG story I was working on until I got off the plane because I was unable to connect to the internet the entire flight. Most travelers agree airline Wi-Fi service has been spotty for years, and Southwest has not been immune to those issues. If the turbulence is faster than the dish can lock, it has to scan for the satellite again. I also noticed a number of 2-3 minute outages during the flight whenever there was any turbulence bigger than what I would consider a light swaying - this makes since as the dish on the plane will lose it's lock to the satellite, and has to re-aquire the signal. The main difference is that Row44 is a satellite service that comes from auto-locking dish that is located in the dome on top of the plane) whereas GoGo has a contract with AT&T that has about 50 of their cell phone towers around the US pointed upwards to provide the service nationwide.ĭue to the nature of satellite, you'll find that Southwest's wifi (and other airlines using Row44) is MUCH slower than GoGo, as there is a much longer latency time for the signal to get from the plane to the satellite, back to the ground, across the internet and back to the satellite and down to the plane than what basically amounts to a cellular connection on steroids. It is based on the Row44 inflight wifi system (Southwest and Allegiant are the only domestic carriers to use Row44) rather than GoGo which is the service pretty much all the other domestic airlines use. Southwest Wifi is $8 all day which is great. Recently went from Orlando to Seattle via Midway.
